The Bosphorous Bridge is probably the world's most heavily trafficked bridge. After 18 years of service the asphalt deteriorated to such an extent that if immediate replacement was not carried out, the steel deck surface would have been damaged progressively making the repairs and resurfacing more costly. This replacement work began in 1991. Mastic Asphalt, using Trinidad Lake Asphalt (TLA) was used in the project in accordance with British Standard Specifications. The bridge was totally reopened to traffic at 6 a.m. on 13 November 1991, work having begun on the 10 August of that same year.
