Use and Application of TLA on Roads

Brenner Autobahn - Austria

The A 13 - Brenner Autobahn is one of the most densely trafficked highways in Europe leading from the town of Innsbruck , the Capital of the Austrian Tyrol up to the Brenner Alpine pass on the Austrian - Italian Border. The high number of vehicles coupled with the geographical conditions which exist influence the design of Asphalt mixes used on the route. At certain altitudes temperatures vary from - 20 C in the winter to over 30C in the summer. On the Brenner pass itself, temperatures can be as low as - 30C. The requirements of the asphalt mixes under these climatic conditions include:

  1. High resistance to deformation
  2. Good low temperature behaviour
  3. Resistance to cracking
  4. Low Fatigue
  5. Resistance to aging

Trinidad Lake Asphalt was proven to fulfill these requirements and was used in the past for modifying the binder used on the A13 Brenner Autobahn. It was also specified for use on parts of the highway during the period 1994 - 1996.
