In 1969 the runway at Bremen Airport was given a wearing course of asphaltic concrete 0/12 with 1.8% by weight of TLA. This pavement provided to be stable, skid proof and resistant to kerosene that when the pavement had to be renewed in 1980 because of installation of an underground lighting system, asphaltic concrete 0/11 was again selected. The compactibility of the mixture was tested in practice by making test surfaces on which anti - skid measurements were also made. Final values were then established:
The asphaltic binder and the wearing course were placed by two gangs each with three successively operating finishers on four days without night work.
Control tests conducted and the visual appearance of the finished pavement after it had been in place for several years are proof of a successful construction project.
